There’s been a church here for about 140 years - although we’re now onto our fourth building (the present one was finished in 1953 - look out for the history section if you are interested to know more about the building(s).) Buildings always present a challenge but God is good and recently we’ve been able to replace our ailing heating system; re-sand and seal the church floor, replace the old wooden chairs with some dead posh chrome framed chairs, and replace the broken grand piano.... All this has been down to generous legacies and grants from the Isabel Blackman Trust (a local charity) and The Veolia Environmental Trust, through the Landfill Communities Fund. So now we are sitting comfortably with warm toes... We invented a special liturgical solemnity (Heating System Sunday!) to have a knees up and celebrate all the good gifts God has sent our way recently.
We're also
thinking about how our buildings would best serve the Kingdom of God, and
we're thinking about re-developing our church hall complex. If you are a
local, or user of the existing facilities, we really need to hear your
opinion - we're using a
questionnaire
to gather information and views and we'd love to hear from you...
St John's stands in the
open Catholic tradition
of the Church of England, so the Eucharist (or Mass) is central to what we
do. Our main service is the
10.30am parish mass on Sunday mornings, when the church family
gathers from across the area and joins round the Lord’s table in obedience
to Jesus’ command when he said “Do this in remembrance of me...” (Luke
22.19). Our Sunday School - the
FROGs - meets during the first half of the service for the younger
worshipper! If there is anything not covered in the website that you would like to know, do make contact. |
